A Summer of Art Exploration

During the summer of 2025, children attending our community of Montessori schools across the country had the opportunity to Explore Art Everywhere as part of our seasonal curriculum. The program helped students tap into their creativity while promoting the development of self-confidence, new skills, and independence. We spent time exploring various artistic mediums and techniques in the classroom and in our outdoor environments.

Why It Matters

Each summer, our classrooms aim to delve deeper into social science and cultural works, taking advantage of the slower pace of summer and opportunities to explore an exciting theme.

This year, in addition to enjoying outdoor spaces with gardening and water play stations, students focused on developing their creativity and strengthening academic skills by exploring art and the artists behind the design. Children journeyed beyond crayons and markers, learning more about artistic tools, patience, practice, mastery, and appreciation of aesthetics and beauty.

Our seasonal Explore Art Everywhere program covered a wide variety of academic and sensorial studies, offering the children opportunities to explore topics including:

  • Color - primary, secondary, and complementary colors; hue, shade, tint, and tone
  • Emotions - expressed through the creative process and evoked by works of art
  • Shapes - organic and geometric; positive and negative; form, dimension, and perspective
  • Styles - textures, patterns, textiles, and collage

Opportunities throughout the summer included Practical Life experiences involving creative food preparation. Children assembled monochromatic snacks inspired by one color, such as a mix of watermelon, cherries, and strawberries. They also had fun crafting a slice of Mondrian-style toast, which is just a fancy way of saying they used fruit to turn their morning pancake into a happy face!

It was truly a creative summer, both indoors and out! Art works included studies of tone and texture, natural and man-made art mediums, and temporary and permanent artistic expression. Children love the chance to explore through hands-on activities led by their imagination.

New works and exciting experiments were added to the classroom to support the children’s explorations. Preparing our minds and bodies with daily exercise, improving dexterity, learning new vocabulary, and increasing our observation skills all added to the fun! Each activity rooted in enrichment helps us create a meaningful foundation to carry the students into a new school year. Registration for next summer’s explorations will begin in early 2026. Make sure you save your spot to join us for our next exciting journey!
